They took a stroll at Na Pohaku just after dawn, a thrill for all of us volunteers working for years to recreate the Hawaiian lowland forest.
The larger area of Kawainui is a “Ramsar Wetland of International Importance,” so come join the February 8th celebration for World Wetlands Day (off Pali Highway next to Kailua Methodist Church, 9-2 pm). There will be plant, cultural and archaeological tours, and children’s activities. I’ll be offering traditional chants. The photo shows a restored nesting area for ‘alae ‘ula, the native bird that gave the demi-god Maui the secret of fire.
